Bangladeshi national held over fake notes

CHENNAI, AUG. 1. The city police on Saturday arrested a Bangladeshi national on charges of buying air tickets with counterfeit currency notes to a travel agent in Triplicane.

Triplicane police said that Musharraf Hussain Minto of Dhaka, Bangladesh, came to the city for treatment of a heart ailment in a leading private hospital. After treatment, he paid Rs. 10,000 and got air tickets for his journey home from a travel agent on Triplicane High Road.

Staff from the travel agent went to a nationalised bank in the same area to deposit their day's collection, which included the Rs. 500 notes given by Musharraf. The bank's cashier, told the travel agency staffer that the 14 of the notes given by him were fake. The travel agent registered a complaint with Triplicane police.

The police arrested Musharraf from a lodge on Triplicane High Road where he was staying. During interrogation, the Bangladesh national told police he had exchanged the notes in Kolkata before arriving here.
