Azhagiri served charge sheet

MADURAI OCT. 10. M. K. Azhagiri, elder son of the former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, and 12 others were served copies of the charge sheet in connection with the Kiruttinan murder case here today.

In the 1,516-page charge sheet bound in two volumes, the investigating agency cited 114 witnesses. The police said Mr. Azhagiri developed "deep animosity" against the former DMK Minister, `Pasumpon' T. Kiruttinan, and decided to "do away with him immediately" to hold the party in his grip.

Explaining instances, including a demonstration at Sivaganga, the `kanji thotti' agitation and the `Tholkappia Poonga' function, the police claimed that the prime accused even wrote a letter to his father (Mr. Karunanidhi) stating that such problems should be nipped in the bud. "Serious differences and a simmering discontent prevailed between A1 (Mr. Azhagiri) and the deceased".

The other accused, including the former Aavin (Madurai and Theni units) Chairman, P.M. Mannan, Mubarak Manthiri, Essar Gobi, Sultan Sulaiman Sait and `Karate' Siva, were "close associates and henchmen" of Mr. Azhagiri, who sought their support for furthering political activities and personal ambitions.
