Assault case against nine persons

Pondicherry Aug. 10. The Superintendent of Police, V.J. Chandran, today said cases had been registered against nine non-teaching staff members of the Pondicherry University following separate complaints from the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, V.T. Patil, and the Public Relations Officer, N. Arunagiri, that they were assaulted by them on university premises on August 6.

Mr. Chandran said seven persons were arrested in connection with the incidents. All the arrested had since been released on station bail.

The former Vice-Chancellor complained that he was beaten while he was taking leave after demitting office at the end of his five-year tenure.

Mr. Chandran said as per instructions of the IG of Police U.K. Katna, the entire beach road (Cours Chabrol) was declared `no tolerance zone' and the intensive patrolling by police for some days had helped in nabbing 20 persons hailing from Madurai, Dindigul and from some parts around Pondicherry. Cases of eve teasing and causing public nuisance under influence of liquor were registered against them. The patrolling would continue in larger interest of people visiting the beach. The drive against eve teasing was also launched in important zones where `Sunday Market` was functioning.
