MADURAI, OCT. 11. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 35 degree Celsius and a minimum of 24 degree Celsius.

Heavy rain

Heavy rain lashed the city this evening, flooding many roads. Accompanied by thunder and lightning, the rain kept motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, off the road.

Water stagnation was reported near the Periyar bus stand, West Veli Street, Vilakkuthoon and near the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. People had to wade through knee-deep water at Jaihindpuram.

The Chennai-Madurai Jet Airways flight could not land at the airport because of the rain and poor visibility.

Water level

The level in Periyar dam stood at 117 feet, with an inflow of 1,448 cusecs and a discharge of 825 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam was 47.11 feet, with an inflow of 675 cusecs and a discharge of 930 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 3,560 mcft.

Uthamapalayam received the highest rainfall of 41 mm, followed by Shanmuganadi — 33, Kallandiri — 16.8, Vaigai dam — 11.4, Marudhanadi, Peranai and Mettupatti — 10 mm each, Andipatti — 5, Viraghanur and Gudalur — 3, Chittampatti — 2 and Tekkadi — 1.

Cash, jewels seized

Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation today seized cash and jewels from two persons in a case of fraudulent withdrawal of huge sums from two banks during 2003.

CBI sources said two luxury cars, Rs. 3 lakhs in cash and 168 grams of gold ornaments were seized from the duo in Madurai and Tirunelveli. The fraudulent withdrawals took place in the Pudukottai and Vadiveeswaram (Kanyakumari district) branches of the State Bank of India.

Acharyas' visit

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, acharyas of the Kanchi Kamakoti Sankara Mutt, will arrive here on October 14 as part of a nine-day visit to the city.

They will take part in a nine-day festival, `Sri Saradha Navaratri Mahotsavam', scheduled to begin from October 15. They will perform special pujas and homams every day. After the Mahotsavam, the seers will leave for Paramakudi en route to Rameswaram. At Rameswaram, they will review the construction of the towers at the Ramanathasami Temple.
