TIRUCHI, AUG.21. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 36.5 degree Celsius and a minimum of 27.1 degree Celsius.

Held under Goondas act

Sankar (24), son of Balakrishnan of Thulukkanathamman Kovil Street at Periyamilaguparai, was detained under the Goondas Act and lodged in the Central Prison as per the orders of the Commissioner of Police, T.P. Sundaramoorthy. He was allegedly involved in cases of robbery, dacoity and extortion.

Woman detained

Easwari (40), wife of Nagarajan of Gorimedu Junction, was detained under the Immoral Traffic Offender Act, on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, T.P. Sundaramoorthy.

She is alleged to have acted in a manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order, causing annoyance to the public for the purpose of prostitution. She was earlier convicted in seven similar cases.

Jewels recovered

The police recently arrested Saravanan (21) of Karaikudi for burgling a house in Edamalaipatti Pudur police station limits.

The police said Saravanan broke open the house at Srinivasa Nagar, when the inmates were away and decamped with 13 sovereigns of jewels.

The police arrested Saravanan when he was moving in a suspicious manner at Sakkottai in Sivaganga district and recovered the jewels from him.

Signature campaign

The Thenindia Nugarvor Padhukappu Kuzhumam has launched a signature campaign to press the demand that Tiruchi district be brought under the jurisdiction of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

The kuzhumam secretary, Uma Muthuswamy, presided. The kuzhumam has decided to collect one-lakh signatures and present them to the President.
