MADURAI JUNE 3. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 38.8 degree Celsius and a minimum of 25 degree Celsius.

The Madurai Airport received 10 mm of rainfall this evening.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam stood at 112.40 feet with a storage of 1295 mcft. The level in the Vaigai dam was 25.30 feet with a discharge of 30 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 1432 mcft.

The amount of rainfall registered at various places (in mm) is: Sothuparai dam - 10, Peranai - 8, Marudanadi - 7, Pulipatti - 4.2, Manjalar dam - 3, Melur - 2.

There was widespread rainfall reported at various places including, Veerapandi, Melur and Peranai.

SP takes charge

T. Sundaresan (55) took charge as Superintendent of Police of Madurai district today, replacing Avi Prakash Sinha.

A 1970-batch Sub-Inspector of Police, Mr. Sundaresan had previously worked as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Madurai City, and Additional Superintendent of Police (Prohibition), Dindigul.

He also served the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) wing in various capacities for 16 years, and had a three-year stint in the Crime Branch Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID).

Training programme

A two-day zonal-level training programme on `combating torture' was held here on Saturday and Sunday.

B. Parthasarathy, former president, Madurai Kamaraj-Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Teachers' Association, inaugurated it.

About 130 human rights activists from various organisations in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul took part in the programme organised by the People's Watch— Tamil Nadu.
