CHENNAI, APRIL 24. The maximum temperature will be around 36 degrees Celsius on Sunday and the sky will remain partly cloudy.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam was 35.4 and 36.4 degrees Celsius respectively, while the minimum was 27.8 and 27.4 degrees Celsius. The humidity level stood at 71 and 68 per cent respectively.

Power cut

Power supply will be suspended on Monday in parts of Kolathur between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. due to maintenance work.

A home for the care and protection of street children was opened by R. Nataraj, Commissioner of Police (Greater Chennai) at Karunalaya, Tondiarpet, on Thursday. The home is a part of Karunalaya, a charitable organisation, that works for the rehabilitation of street and working children.

Greetings from President

The children of Sivananda Orphanage received greetings from President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam recently. In his letter, he advised the children to educate two of their peers. Every child must also plant at least five saplings for environmental conservation.

Convocation ceremony

The convocation ceremony of Hindustan Engineering College, Padur, was held on Thursday. Among those students who received their degrees were 47 rank holders and 79 distinction achievers. The vice-chancellor of the Madras University, S.P.Thayagarajan, presided over the function.

Prizes distributed

Prizes were distributed to the staff of the State Bank of Mysore who participated in various sporting events, last Sunday. The chief general manager, Niranjan Bardaloi, participated at the function held at NSC Bose Road branch.

Cataract detection camp

The Malayalee Club conducted a cataract detection camp at Chetpet on Saturday along with Gremaltes Hospital.

Blood donation

About 100 people donated blood at a camp organised by the Tamil Nadu Peasants and Workers' Party on Friday. The Minister, D. Jayakumar, inaugurated the camp.

Pollution level

The Respirable Dust Particle (RDP) was within the permissible limit of 100 micrograms per cubic metre (mcg/cm) at Kilpauk traffic intersection, 74 mcg/cm and T.Nagar traffic intersection, 52 mcg/cm.

The Suspended Particulate Matter (SDP) was well beyond the permissible limit of 200 mcg/cm at both Kilpauk and T.Nagar, 176 mcg/cm and 154 mcg/cm respectively.

The survey was done between April 22 and 23 by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board under the Chennai Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Programme.
