Temperature

MADURAI, MARCH 3. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 36.5 degree Celsius and a minimum of 20.4 degree Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam was 108.6 feet and the level in the Vaigai dam was 29.23 feet with a discharge of 30 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 978 mcft.

Suicide alleged

A woman allegedly committed suicide after administering poison to her daughter at Mathichiam here today.

According to the police, A. Balu (31), a plumber, picked a quarrel with his wife, B. Lakshmi (25), over a petty issue and left home in a huff. Lakshmi was said to have mixed poison with milk and fed her daughter, Sathya (1).

Later, she consumed poisonous seeds.

However, she realised her `folly' and ran to the Government Rajaji Hospital with her daughter.

While Lakshmi died soon after admission, the condition of Sathya is said to be critical.

As soon as the neighbours informed Balu of the incident, he also consumed pesticide.

When he fell unconscious, his relatives grew suspicious and rushed him to the hospital.

The condition of Balu is also said to be serious.

The Mathichiam police have registered a case.

Detained under Goondas Act

The Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, has ordered the detention of K. Ganesan (33) alias `Karuva' Ganesan alias `Othakadai' Ganesan of Othakadai under the Goondas Act.

According to the police, Ganesan was a history-sheeter, involved in several cases of murder, robbery and criminal intimidation. He will be lodged in the Madurai Central Prison.

Prohibitory order

The Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, has promulgated an order under Section 41 of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act, 1888, prohibiting demonstrations, agitations, meetings, assemblies etc. in the city for a period of fifteen days from today.

However, those intending to organise such gatherings should apply seeking permission five days in advance, according to a release.

Hi-tech facilities

Three new hi-tech facilities, an Automated Teller Machine, Anywhere Banking System and Single Window Concept, were inaugurated by J.S. Vasan, General Manager, in the presence of S. S. Baskaran, Deputy General Manager, at a function organised at the North Veli Street branch of the Canara Bank today.

Awareness campaign

The need to form action groups, with students and villagers, in all hamlets was stressed at an awareness campaign against corruption, organised by the Madurai branch of the Anti-Corruption Movement at Kombadi last week.

The camp was organised to create an awareness against corruption among the NSS volunteers of the Saraswathi Narayanan College and villagers.

The movement also assured to offer all possible helps in getting the genuine demands of the villagers fulfilled.

S. Balasubramanian, NSS Programme Officer, welcomed the participants and Pitchai Raja proposed a vote of thanks.

Free training

The Rudset Institute is to offer a 30-day free TV and radio/basic electronics and services training programme.

The minimum educational qualification for this programme is Standard VIII and the age limit is 18 to 35 years.

The last date for sending filled-in applications is March 20.
