Woman dies of burns

MADURAI, FEB. 26 . A woman, who set herself ablaze at Siruvalai near Samayanallur, died on the spot and her husband and another man, who tried to rescue her, sustained burns last night.

According to the police, the woman's husband, a tailor, who suspected her fidelity, picked a quarrel, when his friend came to his house late last night. The victim doused herself with kerosene and set herself afire.

While the tailor has been admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital, his friend was admitted to a private hospital, against whom the Samayanallur police have registered a case.

Bhavishyanidhi Adalat

The Bhavishyanidhi Adalat for March will be conducted at the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's Sub-Regional Office on the Lady Doak College Road, Chokkikulam, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 10.

Petitions to the `adalat' may be forwarded to N. Balachandran Nair, Regional PF Commissioner-II, on or before February 29.

Lok Adalat

The Canara Bank Marketing Cell (Recovery) recovered Rs.1.63 lakhs on the spot, out of the amount settled for Rs.5.20 lakhs from the 100 cases taken up at the Lok Adalat at the Madurai court recently.

The Divisional Manager, S. Balasubramanian, and officers from Marketing Cell and Lead Bank participated.

`Elect the honest'

The Anti-Corruption Movement has urged the people to elect honest candidates in the coming elections for good and corrupt-free governance at all levels, at its executive committee meeting held recently.

The ACM also sought the support of self-help groups in creating an awareness of anti-corruption movements and called for a collective campaign against corruption.

Paediatric camp

The Karthik Hospital in association with the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam conducted a free paediatric camp at Tirumangalam recently.

More than 400 children were examined and medicines distributed free of cost. Oral polio drops were also administered to the children.

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply in the following areas between 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. on Friday, owing to maintenance work to be carried out at the K.K. Nagar sub-station: Bibikulam, Nethaji Main Road, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram Street, Marudhupandiar Nagar, Satyamurthy Nagar and Meenambalpuram.
