Prisoner dies in hospital

TIRUCHI : A convicted prisoner, who was admitted to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital here a few days ago after he complained of chest pain, died in the early hours of Monday. The deceased has been identified as Vellaichamy (55) of Poolankollai in Peravurani taluk in Thanjavur district.

Trainee constables surrender

Six trainee reserve police constables today surrendered before the court of the Judicial Magistrate No. 2 in connection with their reported assault on the driver of a city bus Kanagaraj (41) on Saturday. The complainant was proceeding from central bus stand to K. K. Nagar, when his instruction to the trainee constables not to travel on the footboard angered the latter resulting in their manhandling him.

Awareness rally on diabetes

On the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, the Tiruchi Corporation organised an awareness rally on diabetes in the city on Monday. A total number of 200 persons, including health nurses and National Cadet Corps cadets took part in the rally, which was inaugurated by the Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan at Woraiyur. The rally passed through Puthur Four Road, Government Hospital before culminating at the Corporation office here.

Held for possessing fake passport

A 55-year old man who landed at Tiruchi from Kuwait on Monday was held at the airport by the Immigration authorities after he was found to be in alleged possession of a fake passport. The accused Mohammed Ali, a native of Aranthangi in Pudukottai district, was later handed over to the Airport Police.

Police said Mohammed Ali obtained a passport in his original name years ago, which he missed it after some time. Later, he allegedly obtained a passport under the fictitious name of Gani by giving false address in Perambalur district. When he returned to Tiruchi from Kuwait by a Sri Lankan flight this morning, the immigration sleuths who checked his passport detected the fraud. Sources said the Airport Police, which arrested Mohammed Ali, has registered a case.

Free coaching

The Centre for Youth Development and Studies of Bharathidasan University will organise a free coaching programme for candidates appearing for the Junior Research Fellowship examination / National Entrance Test from November 19. The training would be held at the Khajamalai campus of the university in the city, a press release said.
