Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Friday stood at 133 feet with an inflow of 758 cusecs and a discharge of 1,841 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam was 53.12 feet with an inflow of 1,598 cusecs and a discharge of 800 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 7310 mcft. Periyar dam received 2 mm rainfall.

One more forum against corruption inaugurated

One more anti-corruption movement, Movement Against Corruption, was inaugurated at a function held in the city on Thursday. S. Rajiah, founder-president, welcomed the gathering and explained the origin, objectives and activities of the movement. P.C. Thenmozhi, Superintendent of Police, Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, inaugurated the movement.

Free training camp

The State Bank of India, Madurai Zonal Office, will conduct a `free training and coaching camp' in batches between August 22 to September 3 to equip candidates belonging to Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes and religious minority communities to attend the forthcoming State Bank of India probationary officers' examination scheduled for September 11.

About 500 candidates will attend the sessions. K.R. Srinivasan, Assistant General Manager, will inaugurate the session on August 22.

Contests for students

Jeevana School has planned to conduct essay and poetry writing competitions in English for students of XI and XII standards on August 24 in remembrance of an English teacher, W.J. Mc Mahaon. Those who want to participate in the competitions can contact the school. The prize distribution ceremony will be held on September 5.

I-Day celebration

The Interact Club of Madurai Meenakshi Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Rotary Club of Madurai East jointly celebrated the 59th Independence Day on the school premises. A resolution passed at the celebration wanted the Government to declare the birthday of President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam as Students' Day.

Contact classes

The Directorate of Distance Education of Madurai Kamaraj University will conduct contact classes on August 27 and 28 for the benefit of students of Madurai and Theni.

According to a press release, classes will be held at Madura College, Madurai for final year undergraduate students and at Nadar Saraswathi School, Theni, for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
