Labourer dies

TIRUCHI : Subramanian (21) of Villupuram district, a labourer, died when he fell down while erecting a roof on a building inside a private industrial unit at Thuvakudi near here today.

Police sources here said he slipped and fell down while engaged in erecting aluminium roof inside the unit and suffered injuries. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital where he died. The Thuvakudi police are investigating the case.

Additional facility

The divisional railway authorities have procured 43 sets of chairs, each set containing three chairs, to be installed on platforms 1,2,3 and 4 in Tiruchi Junction. A sum of Rs. 1.35 lakhs has been spent to buy the chairs in order to provide additional facility for the travelling public. The chairs would be installed shortly, according to railway sources here.

Population Day

A function to mark the World Population Day was conducted at the Human Resource Development Centre, BHEL, near here recently. The Block Extension Educator, Government Primary Health Centre, Navalpattu, D. Paul Pandian, spoke. As many as 100 apprentice trainees participated in the function, a press release said.

Plea to reduce ST

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations Employees Federation, affiliated to the AITUC, has urged the Centre to withdraw fuel price hike. It urged the State government to reduce sales tax on fuel. A resolution to this effect was adopted during the administrative committee meeting of the federation held here recently.

The federation extended its support to road and rail roko agitations planned by the Communist Party of India on July 14 and 15 on the Cauvery issue. Its president S. Kasiviswanathan presided. AITUC state general secretary S.S. Thiagarajan, participated, a press release said. — Staff Reporter
