Alpha starts new school

CHENNAI: Alpha Educational Institutions has started a new school at Sembakkam, Tambaram. The school is located on the Velachery-Tambaram Main Road. Rev. Zacharias Mar Theophilus inaugurated the school in the presence of Grace George, chairperson of the Alpha Group of Educational Institutions and Suja John, director, Alpha.

Cancer screening camp

Global Cancer Concern India held a cancer screening camp at Sevalaya, Thiruninravur, and screened 60 patients last month. A team of doctors from Life Line Rigid Hospitals examined the patients.

Health programme

Hindu Mission Hospital held a health camp on Sunday at the Panchayat Union Elementary School in Mettupalayam. Seven doctors screened 270 persons and 16 cases were referred for free surgery.

Dental check-up

Singhvi Charitable Trust held a dental camp at Tiruppachur on June 12 and 725 persons were screened. About 300 pairs of spectacles will be distributed next week to them.

HIV awareness

Gremaltes Hospital and Sahodaran, an NGO, organised an awareness programme on HIV/AIDS in the Koyambedu market premises on June 11. Around 2,000 people witnessed the two-hour dance programme. The Hospital also organised a carnival for children of leprosy and TB patients in their premises with games, lucky dips and gift bags for winners.

Blood donation

Newgen Imaging Systems, Thiruvanmiyur, held a blood donation camp on Saturday along with Lions Club of Madras Velachery, and collected 113 units of blood from the staff members.

School renovated

Bharat Overseas Bank had contributed Rs. 2.5 lakh to renovate the Villivakkam panchayat union primary school. The chairman of the bank, G. Krishna Murthy inaugurated the renovated building.

Jewels snatched

Neelankarai police have received a complaint of cheating from a jewellery firm, which claimed that a stranger took away 10 sovereigns of jewellery last week.

It said that a man entered Prakash jewellery on East Coast Road, Kottivakkam, and after looking at the gold chains in the shop, asked the owner to show him a few more models. When the owner sent his employee to fetch them from outside, the stranger excused himself and went away. The employee returned later to the shop with injuries on his face. He claimed that the stranger had forced him into an autorickshaw and taken the chains from him. He was let off in Tiruvanmiyur.

Last date extended

The last date for receipt of filled in application forms for admission to first year diploma courses -- general and special reservation categories (ex-servicemen, freedom fighter, eminent sportsmen, physically handicapped) for 2005-06 in the 22 Government Polytechnic Colleges in the State has been extended till June 22.

The counselling for the special reservation categories will be conducted at the Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai-25 on June 27, 28, and 29, says a release.
