Animal sacrifice

Sir, — The recent repeal by ordinance of the Animals and Birds Sacrifices (Prevention) Act, 1950, ought to cause concern to all well-wishers of Hinduism. In the 53 years that the Act was in force, it contributed to the elevation and humanisation of Hinduism. Gory killing of fowl, sheep and buffaloes was prevented at least within the temple premises. Earlier (before 1950), such scenes were enacted right before the sanctum sanctorum in temples.
