Special Correspondent

They make more impact on society than politicians

Thanjavur: Poets make a profound impact on society by their poems and pave way for a social change, said S.S. Palanimanickam, Union Minister of State for Finance here on Saturday.

Speaking at a seminar on `Various facets of Modern Poetry (Pudu Kavithai) in Tamil' at Bharath College of Science and Management and the Tamil University, Mr. Palanimanickam said that the impact made by poets are more than what politicians make in the society. This is because they reflect the society in their poems. They give vent to their emotions and remain extraordinary persons.

The minister released research papers at the conference.

Inaugurating the seminar, Poet Sirpi Balasubramaniyan said that whether it is modern or traditional poetry, poems are the same. Poets used them to express their own or others' experience. Some gave a philosophical thought in their poems while many spoke about humanism, problems of women, problems of identity, motherhood, etc.

Modern poetry is an evolution that took place after prose came into being. Poets took to writing prose and those who wrote prose started writing poetry.

Modern poetry remained the meeting point of prose and poetry.

There are many poets whose imagination and poetry are great. But they were not popular.

Research should be conducted on such poets, Balasubramanian said and cited the example of poet Kambathasan.

Dr. Silamboli Chellappan, Poet Erode Thamizhanban, Prof. N. Ganesan, secretary of Bharath college of science and management, Dr. G. Bhaskaran, Registrar of Tamil University, participated in the seminar.
