Plea from residents of villages in Kanyakumari district to Southern Railway

Nagercoil: The residents of Kothaigramam and Melathathayarkulam, two tiny villages near Nagercoil in the district have appealed to the Southern Railways to construct a cause way near Kumari check dam (where the Southern railway had already laid a track) to Thathaiyarkulam tank and two more passages across Pazahyar river near Kottar railway station.

According to Railway sources, the two villages were situated within the Thiruvananthapuram railway division limits. Moreover the tracks between Nagercoil and Thovalai suffered breaches on the tracks in October and November 1992 due to overflowing of water from the Pazhayar river.

After the first flood, the Southern Railway administration carried out temporary restoration works at an estimated cost of Rs.25.36 lakh, which were washed away in the second flood that occurred after a month. The Railway administration undertook restoration works for the second time at an estimated cost of Rs.26.64 lakh, which included construction of causeway at a cost of Rs.5.31 lakh.

Since the detailed investigation carried out by the Railway Administration in December 1992 recommended the construction of a spill-bridge also in that location, the Divisional Administration submitted a proposal in July 1993 for construction of a spill-bridge at a cost of Rs.12.74 lakh. Although the Chief Bridge Engineer endorsed the proposal, the Chief Engineer did not approve it.
