ERODE: Coconut farmers have urged the State Government to permit them to tap toddy.

The meeting of Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam held here on Monday noted thatdue to Eriophyd mite attack and severe drought, lakhs of coconut trees in the district had withered and farmers had incurred huge loss. Added to this, prices of coconut and copra had fallen.

To compensate the farmers, the meeting urged the Government to permit them to tap toddy from coconut trees. To facilitate the sale of toddy, the Government should start toddy shops.

Elections in cooperatives

Members expressed their concern over the functioning of many cooperative institutions and wanted the Government to conduct elections to these bodies. They demanded that the Central and State Governments permit sugar mills in Tamil Nadu to produce ethanol from sugarcane and sell it to petroleum firms. Sugarcane farmers would thus get reasonable income.

A request was made to the Collector to instruct Erode Milk Producers Cooperative Union to procure all the milk supplied by producers, as at present only a limited quantity of milk was procured from farmers.

Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam has decided to stage a demonstration in front of the District Collectorate seeking a ban on import of oilseeds and other agricultural produce. Because of the import of 7.5 lakh tonnes of palmolein, prices of all oilseeds like coconut, gingelly, sunflower and groundnut had come down in Tamil Nadu.

The meeting was presided over by Sangam president E.R. Kumarasamy.
