Alert driver averts major train accident

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 1. Showing presence of mind, the driver of the Chennai Egmore-Thiruvananthapuram Ananthapuri Express today averted a major tragedy when he applied the brakes on seeing the Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram Vanchinad Express on the same platform at the Central railway station here today.

Railway sources said the Ananthapuri Express halted on platform no. 2, just 200 metres away from where the empty rake of the Vanchinad Express was stationed.

The incident occurred at 12 noon when the Ananthapuri Express, which was coming from Nagercoil, was approaching platform no. 2 as per the signal given by the cabin stationmaster. As the train approached the platform, the yard personnel raised an alarm prompting the driver to apply the brakes. Railway sources said the wrong signal given to the driver to enter platform no. 2 instead of platform no. 3 led to the incident. The signal maintenance work had also commenced today. Insufficient number of stationmasters and traffic staff at the station was also cited as another reason.
