Socio-economic condition of SC/STs to be improved, re-energising land with modern gadgets

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Collector, K. Sellamuthu, on Friday launched a pilot project on comprehensive agriculture land development project for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe people.

It facilitates the SC and ST people to improve their socio-economic condition, re-energising their land with modern agricultural gadgets and technologies. It also aims to make SC and ST women self-reliant, adopting latest technical know-how.

The Agricultural Engineering department along with Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation has taken up implementation of the pilot project at Pamboor in Paramakudi union and North Mallal in Thirupullani union.

The Collector said the State Government had sanctioned Rs.28.21 lakhs for the pilot project. SC farmers would be given special training to develop their farming skill. Beneficiaries' land would be transformed with ploughing, watering and rearranging the soil.

The Agriculture Engineering department would provide bore well at free of cost in order to improve water facilities for the SC land.

Similarly, beneficiaries would be taken to an exposure visit to Coimbatore and Dharmapuri to know the latest farming techniques followed there.

Steps would be taken to increase the earning capacity of self-help women. They would be given training in vermi compost and mushroom cultivation under Swarna Gram Swarajgar Yojana.

The Coastal Saline Research Centre would give special training for SC women to produce value added food products, including pickle, jam and others, he added.

The Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, K. Rajamani, said SC and ST people should utilise the pilot scheme well to improve the economic condition.

D. Jeyachandran, Joint Director, Agriculture, M. Manavalan, Assistant Director, Mr. Mahendran, Scientist in charge, CSRC, S. Shaik Abdullah, Agriculture Officer, and others participated.
