Government urged to construct groynes in coastal areas to minimise the fury of nature

Nagercoil: The Legal Services to Tsunami Victims in Kanyakumari district here has urged the Government to construct additional bridges for a safe exit of fishermen in hours of natural calamities in future.

A resolution was unanimously passed at the executing committee meeting held here on Wednesday.

In another resolution, the members urged the Government to construct groynes, wherever necessary in the coastal areas to minimise nature's fury. It should undertake study on the sudden fall in the catch of fish and the changes in sea after the killer waves hit the coastal areas.

The Government should take full responsibility to purchase the land for construction of new houses for the tsunami victims.

A monitoring committee should be formed to monitor the quality of the construction. The permanent houses should be set up 200 metres away from the high-tide areas as per the Coastal Regulation Zone.

Green belt

Moreover, a green belt should be created between the sea and the living quarters and concrete shelters erected on the shore for fishermen to keep their fishing implements. The members also urged the Government to extend fuel subsidy to mechanised boat operators to safeguard their livelihood.

The Government should also set up a 'tsunami victims' redressal forum to settle the grievances of tsunami victims.
