Representatives of country-boat owners of Avudaiyarkovil taluk, on Friday, have sought immediate intervention by the district administration and take action against the mechanised boat owners who had attacked a group of country boat fishermen in mid sea on March 10.

In a memorandum to District Collector S. Ganesh, a group of country-boat fishermen referred to the attack by a section of mechanised boat owners in the mid-sea.

The memorandum said the attack caused panic and a sense of insecurity among the country-boat and fibre-boat fishermen.

The memorandum sought joint action by the Fisheries Department officials and the Coastal Security Police personnel in this regard.

R. Ganesan, co-ordinator of the Pudukottai District Country-boat Fishermen Welfare Association, who led the representatives, said the country-boat fishermen had been demanding strict enforcement of pair trawling and purse seine nets by the mechanised boat owners.

Irked over this demand, the mechanised boat owners attacked the country boat fishermen.
