Abandon borewell project: CPI (M)

CUDDALORE, JUNE 4. The Cuddalore district Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s executive, which met here on Thursday urged the State Government to stop drawing ground water (meant for Chennai) from giant borewells.

It noted in a resolution that there was a danger that this move would totally dry up water sources in the Panruti-Neyveli region, thus posing problems to the farmers and the people. Hence, it called upon the government to abandon the project.

In another resolution, it hailed the judgment relating to the custodial death of Rajakannu at Khammapuram.

The party considered it as a victory for its long-drawn struggle to establish the truth, and now its efforts had been vindicated.

It said that the verdict would serve as a lesson to those who indulge in human rights violations and abuse the laws with impunity.

In another resolution, it pointed out the standing crops at Kalkunam, Boothampadi, Adur Agaram, Pudupettai and Kothavacheri suffered damage in the recent rains.

It called on the administration to take speedy measures for disbursement of relief to the affected farmers.
