A void

Sir, — The demise of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer has left a void in the world of Carnatic music. A musical genius and stalwart with a simple lifestyle, he radiated joy and peace. The twinkle in his eyes endeared him to his fans. He transported us to a totally different world during his concerts.

Sir, — Semmangudi represented the original gurukula traditions of Carnatic music. His fans were pleasantly stunned when his first gramophone record was released in 1931. His alapana of `Karaharapriya' was the piece de resistance in the album and was also the talk, for days on end, in music circles.
