A morning full of pleasant surprises

CHENNAI: The first person to telephone and inform R.M. Somanathan of DAV Matriculation, Mogappair East that he scored 1076 out of 1100 and had stood first in the State rank list in the matriculation examination was a reporter.

"I thought it was one of my friends playing a trick on me," says this young boy who has been posing for photos and being interviewed all day. "I did, sort of, expect a rank, but not the first," he says, adding that he dreams of becoming a doctor.

The person who felt the happiest for him is his elder sister (a student of BITS Pilani), who is here in Chennai on vacation. "I like cricket and do play cricket. Sachin Tendulkar is my favourite Indian batsman," says this teenager who has scored an outstanding academic innings this year.

G. Aishwarya, who scored the first rank in the Oriental School Leaving Certificate examination, too was surprised. She is a student of Sri Ahobila Math Oriental Higher Secondary School at West Mambalam. Although she wants to take up engineering studies, Aishwarya says she would rather wait for the outcome of her Plus-Two performance.
