A laudable gesture

Sir, — The Election Commission, being an independent constitutional authority, has rightly directed that the contesting candidate's past — as to his/her criminal record — and information on his/her assets and that of dependents be made known in the nomination paper. The EC's action is laudable in the interest of democracy and will be applauded by all those who cherish a clean democracy.

Evidently, the Government and political parties are not happy with the Supreme Court judgment of May 2 for reasons best known to them. It is time the electoral reforms, talked about for the past several years, were enacted for qualitative and effective governance. An all-out effort should be made in this direction by the EC keeping in view the experiences gained in the election process and the lacunae in the existing laws.
