PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai Assistant Sessions Judge C. Kuppusamy, on Monday, sentenced K. Krishnamurthy alias Singh (31) of Avudaiyarkovil to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for having inflicted injuries on Swamy Niyamananda of Tirupparayathurai Mutt, camping at Avudaiyarkovil for performing the religious rituals at Sri Athmanathaswamy temple in Avudaiyarkovil.

The objection raised by Swamy Niyamananda over setting up a coconut-stall by Krishnamurthy alias Singh at the entrance to the temple on the eve of the ‘Ani Tirumanjanam’ car festival at the temple caused the trouble.

A group with weapon and led by Krishnamurthy alias Singh attacked Swamy Niyamananda during the festival held in 2003. Swamy Niyamananda, who then led the temple car renovation committee, suffered injuries on the eye-brow and was treated. Krishnamurthy alias Singh and three others — Kutti Shanmugam (35); Marimuthu (27) and Pandian (27) were arrested. Three others were acquitted.
