ERODE: To mark the formation of Erode Corporation a pillar would be built in front of the office at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh. The construction work of the pillar is fast progressing. The Municipal office is getting a facelift too.

The Erode Municipal Council chairman, K. Kumar Murugesh, who will be the first Mayor of the newly formed corporation said: “Already the Government has announced the granting of more than Rs. 200 crore for works to be carried out in the Municipal Corporation area. They would be executed in a phased manner.”

Already Erode is getting a revenue of Rs. 38 crore and when it is made a corporation by including neighbouring municipalities and panchayats, the revenue will be more than Rs. 50 crore annually.

Mr. Murugesh said the 136-year-old Erode Municipality, which was formed in 1871, will be around 160 sq km once it became a corporation.

He said without taxing the residents, development works will be carried out.
