Presents Manimegalai Award for best working women SHG

NAGAPATTINAM: Women self-help groups (SHGs) are functioning effectively in Nagapattinam district and most of the groups have started income-generating viable small business and small cottage units in the district, said Collector M. Jayaraman, here on Saturday.

Presenting the district-level ‘Manimegalai’ award of Rs.50,000 to the best working women SHG of Kariapattinam village at a function and also awards and certificates to the women SHGs who won various competitions in cultural events for the year 2007-08, the Collector said that there were 12,166 women SHGs with 1.91 lakh members functioning and pointed out that these groups had achieved a savings of Rs.74.12 crore.

He said that the district administration had fixed a target to provide revolving fund to 3,500 women SHGs during the current year of which 1,500 groups had already received the fund in September last year. The remaining 2,000 groups will get the revolving fund in two months time, he said.

Mr. Jayaraman pointed out that out of the target of forming 500 new women SHGs, 358 groups had already formed in all the 434 panchayats. The commercial and co-operative banks had provided several crores of rupees to 26 SHGs for starting income-generating economic activities. The Collector said that out of the 4.50 lakh population of women, about two lakh women had become members of SHGs.
