CHENNAI: The Rotary Club of Adyar presented its "Vocational Excellence Award" to Carnatic vocalist Bombay Jayashri here on Tuesday.

The citation said the honour was being conferred on the musician "for her significant contributions to the field of Carnatic music, deeply rooted in tradition reaching out to the staunch traditionalists as well as the younger generations" and "for her efforts at pursuing the art beyond the concert format to other creative forms like composition of music for ancient Tamil literature."

Presenting the award, Jegath Gaspar, Managing Director, Goodwill Communications Private Limited, complimented the musician on the intensity she could bring to music.

He said music was equivalent to God. There could be no compromise on it, but eminent artists should reach out to the people.

He felt that music did not need any language, but there could be a "meritorious unity between language and music which we have to keep promoting."

Aruna Subramaniam, president, and R. Ravvi Shankar, district chairman, vocational service, spoke.
