Verification of ration cards from Saturday

In a door-to-door programme to weed out bogus cards

THANJAVUR: Cent per cent verification of ration cards in Thanjavur district will be taken up from July 25 according to Collector M. S. Shanmugham.

Speaking at a training programme for the government staff who would be verifying ration cards by approaching people in a door to door programme here on Tuesday, Mr. Shanmugham said that 1,615 field staff would be used in this work.

From July 25 the work would be taken up in the following five Saturdays and Sundays in the district.

A total of 336 supervisors have also been appointed for this purpose. In a similar verification conducted in Coimbatore district recently 1.25 lakh bogus ration cards were confiscated. In Tiruchi district 75,000 bogus cards were seized.

In Thanjavur district also bogus cards would be eliminated by this exercise. Field staff should keep in mind that they are helping the nation by this work.

Essential commodities would reach the real beneficiaries only when bogus cards were eliminated. People should also give proper information to the officials, the collector said. There are 6.58 lakh ration cards in the district now. A total of 10,400 tonnes of rice and 1800 kilo litres of kerosene were being distributed to the ration card holders.
