Vandalising of Thevar statue sparks tension

MADURAI: Tension prevailed at Usilampatti and adjoining areas on Thursday after miscreants damaged a statue of freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar at Kodanginayakkanpatti in Madurai district.

While shops remained closed till late evening, police pickets were deployed in sensitive areas. No untoward incident was reported.

Buses went off the roads as the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation suspended operations on several routes.

A few buses resumed services in the afternoon with police escort. TNSTC sources said the police had advised them to withdrawn night services as a precautionary measure.

Madurai Superintendent of Police, T.S. Anbu, said a strong posse of policemen had been stationed at Kodanginayakkanpatti, Usilampatti and other vulnerable spots.
