AIADMK leader, supporters had blocked traffic in Medavakkam

TAMBARAM: Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam Municipality chairman P.A. Jayachandran and his colleagues belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were arrested on Friday night when they squatted on Medavakkam Main Road, preventing the movement of traffic.

They were protesting against the alleged assault on Mr. Jayachandran by a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The Municipal Chairman visited the office of Padmanaban, an advocate and DMK party member, who allegedly threatened Rajasekar, an AIADMK functionary, some days ago.

Mr. Jayachandran alleged that Mr. Padmanabhan had assaulted him and Mr. Rajasekar when they went to his office. As news about the incident spread, AIADMK workers assembled at the Madipakkam junction on Medavakkam Main Road and squatted there around 9 p.m.

Even after senior police officers urged them to leave, the AIADMK men continued to block traffic.

Traders in the area put up the shutters, fearing untoward incidents. When the protestors did not disperse even till 10.30. p.m., the police arrested the chairman and 29 others and remanded them to judicial custody.

The Madipakkam police are also investigating a complaint lodged by the Municipal chairman against Mr. Padmanabhan.

Due to the protests, motorists proceeding to both Medavakkam and Alandur areas were stranded.
