Udhagamandalam: The changes in the dates of the season related festivities during the current summer necessitated by the elections to the 15th Lok Sabha and the almost daily dose of thunder showers or hail storms notwithstanding this years main attractions organised by the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops in association with the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Development Agency and the district authorities are expected to be trend setters.

Novel features

In a bid to break the monotony and introduce some professionalism in the manner in which the events are conducted, the organisers have introduced a number of novel features. Billed as Ooty Flower Festival 2009 they are being promoted as India’s premier floral extravaganza.

In keeping with the reputation of the vacation destination and the growing popularity of the events an attractive brochure has been brought out.

It not only provides in a nutshell details pertaining to the annual flower show, the rose show, the fruit show and the vegetable show but also highlights the glory of the Queen of Hill Stations and the importance being given to floriculture.

Pointing out that such value addition was long overdue, the Director of Horticulture and Plantation Crops B. The Centenary Rose Park which will host the eighth Rose Show on Wednesday has been given a facelift. While topiary works have been carried out, the view points have been strengthened and lawns improved.

Within a couple of months the heritage roses section will be ready and soon the park itself will be extended.

At the rose show apart from the thousands of roses in full bloom a huge rose trophy and a pea cock made of roses will be among the major attractions. In view of the rains precautionary measures will be stepped up. Steps have been taken to relieve traffic congestion near the park.

Stating that a great deal of importance is being attached to the 113th Flower Show at the Government Botanical Garden on May 22, 23 and 24, Dr.Chandra Mohan said that on show would be a look alike of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) made of carnations. There would also be an aeroplane made of roses.

Pointing out that about 10,000 potted plants would be displayed,he said that for the first time people from other states including Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka and Kerala will participate.

The number of competitions will be around 250.Among the stalls will be those of industries associated with floriculture. There will also be a mega pavilion displaying products of farmers who have benefited from the National Horticulture Mission. There will also be a display cum sale of mangoes brought from Salem and Dharmapuri.

Arrangements are also being made to organize in a splendid manner the 2nd vegetable show at the Nehru Park in Kotagiri on May 25 and 26 and the 51st Fruit Show at the Sims Park in Coonoor on May 30 and 31.
