UPA victory augurs well for southern districts: trade bodies

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the election of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) south zone organising secretary M.K. Azhagiri in the Madurai Lok Sabha Constituency.

In a press release, its senior president S. Rethinavelu said that with his election southern Tamil Nadu was sure to witness an unprecedented upswing in matters of development of trade and industry. He appealed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to provide a Cabinet berth with an important portfolio for Mr. Azhagiri.His victory, Mr. Rethinavelu said, has revived the hopes of people of southern districts that long-pending projects would be provided an impetus and bring about development.

These projects include upgrading Madurai airport to international one, establishment of information technology parks in Madurai and Tirunelveli, establishing big multinational companies such as car-manufacturing units, which would bring in many auxiliary small scale industries, implementation of Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP), railway projects such as doubling of Madurai-Chennai broad gauge line, upgrading Tuticorin port to Container Transhipment Port and establishment of Special Economic Zone in Nanguneri, he said.

Clear mandate

The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has welcomed the mandate in favour of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, saying it would enable it to form a stable Government at the Centre. In a press release, Association secretary P. Subash Chandra Bose lauded the Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for victory in elections.

He said the clear mandate by the people has given the UPA an opportunity to take the country down the path of development in all fields. With like-minded parties in the State and Centre, the development of the State would receive an impetus, he said.

He called for expediting the SSCP, doubling of railway tracks between Chennai and Kanyakumari, upgrading Madurai airport to international one, establishment of IT and Tidel parks in Tamil Nadu, atomic power plants, and an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai.
