38 hotels have been sealed recently for not following sanitation rules



CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Monday sealed two restaurants, Picnic Park on EVR Periyar Salai and Everest Restaurant on Poonamallee High Road for not having diaphragm chambers and letting unfiltered sewage into the main lines.

According to a press release, the employees of the restaurants had not obtained medical certificates.

The equipment did not have permits and kitchen was not properly maintained.

A total of 38 hotels have been sealed recently by the civic body for not following safety and sanitation requirements, said an official.

The action of civic body against such hotels would continue, said the official.

Allowed to reopen

The six eateries within the Secretariat complex that were shut down on Friday were allowed to reopen by Chennai Corporation on Monday morning.

The eateries — Karpagam, Darbar, Bharath, Siva, Welcome, and Co-operative Employees Canteen — were shut down because they did not follow hygienic practices for preparing and storing food.

However, they opened on Monday morning, after providing a legal undertaking to the civic body to undertake improvement works.

Accordingly, improvement works were also started .

The food handlers would also be put through regular health checks and then given a licence, the eateries assured health authorities.
