Two men drown in Selaiyur Lake

TAMBARAM: Two men employed as conservancy workers in different civic agencies drowned in the Selaiyur Lake near Tambaram on Sunday, when they went for fishing.

Selaiyur police said that Gajapathy (54) of Moovar Street in East Tambaram was a conservancy worker with Pallavaram Municipality. Along with Venkatasamy (54) of Ambal Nagar in Saidapet, a conservancy staff with the Chennai Corporation and Muthukumar (30) of East Tambaram, he had gone to a relative’s house in Adhi Nagar, Selaiyur.

The three men are reported to have consumed liquor before proceeding to the Selaiyur Lake.

The police said that the three had a sizable catch. But Gajapathy tried to pluck white Lillies from the water surface and was caught in the slush. Venkatasamy jumped into the water to help him.

Eye-witnesses said that though Venkatasamy managed to grab Gajapathy’s hand, both of them were pulled into the water . Muthukumar, who was on the bank, cried for help.

Residents of Adhi Nagar tried to help, but could not. Personnel at Selaiyur police station and the Fire Control Room in Tambaram were alerted. Firemen rushed to the spot
