MADURAI: Two brothers were hacked to death in broad daylight here on Sunday. The incident occurred in front of the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range) on the Alagarkoil Road around 10 a.m. Police termed the attack as revenge murder.

According to police sources, S. Karaiadi Madasamy (46) and his brother, S. Thirumalaivelu (42) of Aladipatti in Tirunelveli district were going to the Tallakulam police station here when a five-member gang that came in two motorcycles attacked them indiscriminately with deadly weapons.

The duo suffered grievous injuries and died on the spot.

The victims, who were among seven persons accused in a murder in 2007 in the Sorandai police station limits, were released on conditional bail on March 25.

They were proceeding to sign a register in the police station when the gang intercepted them.

The murders took place in full public view in the busy locality forcing people to run helter-skelter.

The bodies were shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), R. Ramrajan, said a special team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, S. Kumaravel, had been formed to apprehend the suspects.

“The murder appears to be an offshoot of a 2007 killing in Sorandai involving money transactions. We have clues on the identity of the suspects and arrests would be made soon,” he said.

The Tallakulam police have registered a case.

Mobile phone recovered

A mobile phone used by one of the assailants was recovered from the scene of crime, police sources added.
