MADURAI: A section of fishermen from Tuticorin district moved the Madras High Court Bench here against alleged use of nets prohibited under the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1983 by a group of fishermen belonging to Uvari in Tirunelveli district.

A Division Bench comprising Justices R. Regupathi and R. Subbiah ordered notice to the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Secretary, Commissioner of Fisheries, Tirunelveli Collector and Radhapuram MLA M. Appavu among others. The case was adjourned for hearing after Christmas vacation which ends on January 3.

In its public interest litigation petition, the Tuticorin District Country Boat Fishermen Association claimed that their rivals operating under the banner of Tirunelveli District Country Boat and Catamaran Fishermen Association were using fishing gear that affected the prospects of other fishermen.

The petitioner association said that the Uvari fishermen were following the Purse Seine and Ring Seine fishing techniques, barred under Section 6 of the Fishing Regulation Act, by giving them a new name ‘Vallayam Vaitha Veechu Valai.’ They used 18 mm nets, from cord to cord, that harmed the fauna.

The association alleged that the policemen were not assisting the Fisheries Department officials in confiscating the fish caught through such prohibited techniques due to the intervention of the MLA and two other local politicians.

It sought a direction to strictly implement the provisions of the Act and consequent Government Orders.
