Training for teachers on handling laptops

TIRUCHI: Having received laptops supplied by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) earlier this year, headmasters of 61 government higher secondary schools in the district have something to cheer about at long last.

The school education department has planned to orient them on the use of laptops during the winter vacation. A two-day training has been planned for nearly 150 headmasters of government and aided higher secondary schools, the Chief Educational Officer M. Swaminathan said. The participants of the orientation programme will also consist of headmasters of aided schools for whom their respective managements had provided laptops.

By and large, headmasters are quite enthusiastic over the prospect to carry out seamless administration through the laptops. For, the laptops that could be relied upon for accessing entered data pertaining to the welfare schemes such as free uniform, books and bicycles, besides information on individual students, and salary bills of teaching and non-teaching staff, would serve as a ready-reckoner whenever information is sought by higher-ups. Much time could be saved by corresponding though e-mail.

But then, there lies the hitch. For Government schools, obtaining Internet connection with broadband speed from the BSNL has not been a smooth sail so far. Even in the event of being provided with broadband connectivity, they are clueless as to how the bill would be booted every month. A few head masters who use data cards for Internet connectivity have been paying out of their own pockets, it is learnt.
