Thrissur ‘Pooram’ comes to city

Chennai: The Confederation of Tamil Nadu Malayalee Associations will stage a mini-version of Thrissur ‘Pooram’ followed by a fireworks display in the city on September 30.

Its president M. Nanda Govind told reporters here on Saturday that the celebrations titled ‘Aavanipoovarangu’ would begin at 8.45 a.m. on September 29 at the grounds of St. George Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, opposite College, on Poonamallee High Road.

A series of programmes including a sports meet, literary seminar, food festival, consumer exhibition, a ‘pookkalam’ (flower carpet design) competition and folk art performances will be held .

The highlight of the carnival will be a Pooram, at 2.30 p.m. on September 30, complete with the traditional temple instruments’ recitals of ‘Panchavadayam’ and ‘Melam’.

Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will be the chief guest at a public meeting at the valedictory of the event. Kerala Law Minister M. Vijayakumar and U.S. Consul General in Chennai David T. Hopper will participate.

An awards ceremony to recognise contributions in social service field will be part of the event. K.V. Nair, chairman of the celebration committee, said entry to the festival is free.
