Thondi facility: VC allays fears

SIVAGANGA: There is no proposal to shift the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies from Thondi to Karaikudi, according to P. Ramasamy, Vice Chancellor, Alagappa University.

Allaying apprehensions, he said that to the contrary steps were taken to provide more infrastructure and manpower to the Thondi facility. He told The Hindu here on Sunday that the Department was started in 1998 to provide higher education and take up research activities in the field of ocean.

The on-shore property of the university helped in development of the ocean-related programmes.

Mr. Ramasamy said that Rs.75 lakh had been sanctioned for the construction of laboratories.

New posts were created to improve the academic and scientific standards of the department. Recruitment process was initiated to appoint a professor and two lecturers. New equipment were procured to facilitate research and to impart practical training to students.

The Planning Board of the university had recommended allotment of Rs.8 crore for the construction of research laboratory, hostels —one for men and another for women, and staff quarters.

The standing committee on academic affairs and the syndicate had approved the creation of centres for Marine Microbial Technology, Marine Pharmacology and Marine Geology at Thondi.
