Oil and gas industry urges citizens to save fuel and gas

CHENNAI: From car pooling to cooking without fire, people can do a lot towards conservation of fuel and gas. This was highlighted at the valedictory function of the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight, which was observed by the oil industry from January 15.

Addressing the meeting, Transport Commissioner S. Machendranathan said crude oil and petroleum products accounted for a major portion of the total import basket of the country.

“There is need to increase the fuel efficiency by spreading awareness of right practices among major user segments such as industry, transportation and agriculture,” he said. He also appreciated the efforts of the oil industry in instituting awards for the State Transport Corporations for best performance in fuel conservation.

V. K. Jayachandran, Executive Director, Indian Oil Corporation, traced the evolution of the oil industry and underscored the need for conserving fuels for the sake of future generation. He urged people to consume local produce as far as possible so that precious fuel need not be spent on transporting food items over longer distances.

People could switch off the engines at traffic signals and drive steadily in moderate speed to save fuel, said R.Chidambaram, spokesperson of IOC, Southern Region.

At home, consumption of cooking gas could be reduced by including more salads and juices in the diet, he added.

Winners of several contests, including those for students, organised as part of the fortnight were presented prizes at the function by Mr.Machendranathan.
