TIRUCHI: The much-awaited flood prevention scheme for Tiruchi is all set to take off soon with the Public Works Department calling for tenders for the project recently.

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) would finance a major portion of the project and has sanctioned Rs.197.17 crore under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).

The project envisages strengthening the bunds of the Cauvery and Coleroon rivers in Tiruchi, Karur and the combined Perambalur districts, besides improvements to Uyyakondan and Kudamuritti rivers in Tiruchi city. Nearly 45 works would be taken up under the project.

The implementation would be a big relief for city residents living in the flood-prone areas. The project has been pending for nearly a decade now and every flooding resulted in a public outcry.
