TASMAC shops function with police protection

Employees announced agitation

: The TASMAC liquor retail outlets functioned as usual in the southern districts, said Inspector General of Police (south zone) S.S. Krishnamoorthy here on Wednesday.

The TASMAC employees had announced a statewide stir to press the government to consider their demands, including salary revision among others.

Though the government had assured to look into the demands, the employees had declared to go ahead with the strike. In a bid to ensure that shops were run as usual, the authorities had taken alternative steps. Elaborate banodbust arrangements were made by the police.

When contacted, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said that there are about 1,600 TASMAC liquor retail outlets in south zone (excluding Tirunelveli city).

All the SPs and DIGs were told to provide necessary bandobust and ensure that there were no untoward incidents.

But for a few shops, which had downed shutters till noon in Virudhunagar district, a majority of them functioned as usual, he added.

Commissioner of Police (Madurai city) P. Balasubramanian said that adequate police personnel were deployed at the shops and no shops had downed shutters. In Madurai rural district, all the 176 shops remained open as usual, the police added.
