RAMANATHAPURAM: The police on Sunday seized 2500 kg of suspected explosive substance and a mini-lorry used for transporting it. Two persons were detained for interrogation.

Based on an intelligence inputs by “Q” branch personnel, a highway police patrol party intercepted a lorry (TN-65-6112), which was coming from Madurai to Rameswaram, between Kamudhakudi and Paramakudi.

On seeing the police party, a person who was travelling in the vehicle ran way from the scene.

When the police searched the lorry, they found 50 bags of “unknown chemical substance.” The driver was identified as Subramanian (29), son of Karuppasamy of Gandhi Nagar in Rameswaram, who was also the owner of the vehicle. Top police and the “Q” branch officials, including the Superintendent of Police, Ramanathapuram district, R. Thirugnanam, reached the spot and questioned the driver. Bomb detection and disposal squads from Madurai and Ramanathapuram were also pressed into service.

“We suspect that the material is meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka. It seems that a group of persons has been involved in this. A few key persons are on the run. Special parties have been sent to various places to secure absconding persons. Information such as to whom the material is meant for and others will be known only after their arrest,” a top “Q” branch police officer told The Hindu on Monday.

The police suspect that it was one G. Sekar alias “Celon” Sekar (53) of Rameswaram booked the lorry to bring the substance. He is involved in several smuggling cases. The material was reportedly loaded at Thirumangalam in Madurai district.
