Summary revision of rolls begins

TIRUCHI: Summary revision of electoral rolls commenced in the district on Monday. The draft rolls with photos were published and put up in post offices, polling station locations, and village panchayat offices.

Claims and objections will be accepted from December 8 to 12. A special campaign would be conducted on November 24 and 25 and on December 2 for inclusion and deletion of names. Scanning of photo database would be completed by January 4, 2008, and the final rolls published on January 11, 2008, the District Collector Ashish Vachhani told reporters.

The name lists of voters have been provided to political parties and resident welfare associations, he said, urging voters, particularly those who had completed 18 years as on January 1, 2008, to utilise the opportunity without fail.

Mr. Vachhani said that the Tiruchi-Srirangam Underground Sewerage Scheme undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has been completed in Tiruchi area where testing was currently underway. In Srirangam area, the works will be over by this month-end.

He informed about the plans on the anvil to decongest East Boulevard Road by confining loading and unloading activities to night hours; identifying adequate space for parking of lorries elsewhere; and removing unauthorised shops. City buses would be operated along the road, he assured.

Mass cleaning would be undertaken in all overhead tanks maintained by local bodies for three days from November 30, he said.

Detailing the Rural Water Supply Schemes, N. Palaniappan, Executive Engineer, TWAD, RWS Division, said 100 out of the 175 works taken up under the Individual Power Pump Scheme have been completed, and the rest were slated for completion by January 2008. Of the total estimate cost of Rs.8.02 crore, a sum of Rs.2.33 crore has been spent so far. Water supply schemes to 23 schools and two BC Hostels taken up at a cost of Rs.38.34 lakh; rejuvenation works for Rs.45 lakh in 31 places; have been completed, he said.

The Combined Water Supply Schemes (CWSS) in 43 habitations in Tiruverumbur Union at a cost of Rs.4.9 crore, and in 22 habitations in Andanallur Union at a cost of Rs.80 lakh have been completed. Water supply schemes to weekly markets taken up at a cost of Rs.18 lakh have also been completed.

At Manikandam Union where the CWSS commenced on November 1, 2007, the works would be completed at a cost of Rs.13.1 crore by October 2008. The District Manager of THADCO A. Veeramani said the Government has sanctioned Rs.1.99 crore for undertaking seven schemes for 2007-08.
