TAMBARAM: Primary Health Centres at Kunrathur and Medavakkam will soon be upgraded as 30-bed hospitals, Labour Welfare Minister T. M. Anbarasan said on Tuesday. Speaking at ‘varumun kaappom’ (preventive healthcare) camps at the Municipal High School in Old Pallavaram, he said there were proposals to upgrade the facilities at Kunrathur near Pallavaram and at Medavakkam near Tambaram. On implementation, they would benefit families in rural pockets served by these Primary Health Centres.

The preventive healthcare camp, second in Pallavaram Municipality, was inaugurated by the Minister in the presence of Municipal Chairman E.Karunanidhi and K. Vanaja, Deputy Director of Health Services, Saidapet Health Unit District. Officials of the Health Department said the PHCs at Medavakkam and Kunrathur had six beds and only facilities to handle deliveries. Once they were upgraded with 30 beds and operation theatres, minor surgeries could be performed and treatment to complicated ailments given, they said.

The Medavakkam PHC was the ‘Block PHC’ of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union (Block) and hence the decision to upgrade it.
