Student kidnapped for ransom, rescued

: In a swift operation early on Tuesday, the Maduravoyal police rescued a student, who was allegedly kidnapped for ransom by two of his friends. Two students, including a first-year MBA student, were arrested.

According to police sources, Rahul Kumar (22) of Uttar Pradesh, a third-year student of a private university in Maduravoyal residing in Nerkundram, was missing since Monday evening.

A couple of hours later, his father Ramesh, a businessman in Uttar Pradesh, received a phone call from an unidentified person that he had kidnapped his son.

The accused threatened to kill Rahul if a ransom of Rs.50,000 was not paid. Ramesh alerted his friend in Chennai who informed the local police.

Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S.R. Jangid formed a special team to investigate the case. The team followed specific clues and zeroed in on a house in Mogappair where two students had confined Rahul.

Police rescued the victim and apprehended Amitabh Deepak, a final-year engineering student, and Rajkumar of Bihar, a first-year MBA student. “Rahul was last seen with the suspects by his friends. The motorcycle used to commit the offence was seized,” Mr. Jangid said.

Rahul who was beaten up while in custody of the accused was referred to a private hospital for treatment. A dispute over the damage of a two-wheeler owned by Deepak triggered the kidnap, police sources added.
