Dayanidhi Maran will give Rs. 1.5 crore from the local area development fund

Chennai: The foundation stone for a new bridge over the Cooum near Mehta Nagar in Aminjikarai was laid on Monday.

The vehicular bridge will be constructed at the cost of Rs. 3.67 crore. It will link Mehta Nagar Officer’s Colony First Street and Venkatachalapathy Street. Dayanidhi Maran, Central Chennai Member of Parliament, laid the stone.

Initially, Mr. Maran was to provide Rs. 1.5 crore from his local area development fund and the remaining would be drawn from the Chennai Corporation. However, on Monday, he said that the entire amount could be drawn from fund allotted to him under the local area development scheme. If the funds were not sufficient, he said the civic body could use assistance from the development fund of Electricity Minister and Anna Nagar constituency MLA Arcot N. Veeraswami.

Mr. Veeraswami agreed to extend full support for projects in his constituency. He said that the bridge would be constructed in one year. However, the contractor for the project was yet to be identified. Tenders had been called for the project and evaluation of bids was under way.

The bridge would be about 150 metres long and 8.5 metres wide. It would also have footpaths for pedestrians. Mayor M. Subramanian said that residents of Mehta Nagar would benefit from this new link. He listed the renovated Thiru.Vi.Ka Park in Shenoy Nagar, the ongoing renovation of Tower Park and the proposed indoor auditorium as the civic body’s major projects for Anna Nagar.

Assistance of Rs.11.10 lakh was distributed under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Scheme for 74 beneficiaries .
