Steps will be taken to establish sports facilities in Ramanathapuram: Collector

RAMANATHAPURAM: Collector T.N. Hariharan assured that he would initiate all possible steps to develop sports and establish facilities for it in the district.

Distributing prizes to winners of district-level badminton tournament held here on Sunday, he said that development of sports was important as it would help people to maintain their physique as well as the mind in a perfect way. The district had excellent infrastructure for sports, including tennis, badminton, swimming pool and other disciplines. It has been brought to his knowledge that there were vacancies for various disciplines. Necessary action would be taken to sort out the issue. All facilities should be fully utilised. More and more people should come forward to utilise the facilities.

The Superintendent of Police, Pradip Kumar, said inactiveness and sedentary lifestyle was the main reason for various diseases. Regular exercise and participating in sport activities on daily basis could help people to maintain good health. M.B. Venkatesh, Commandant of Coast Guard Station, Mandapam, said that awareness of sports had been improved a lot over the years. Children should be involved in sports from the early stage itself.

The Collector gave away first prize to Anwar and Rajesh pair of Paramakudi, who defeated Isakki and Chandrasekaran pair of Ramanathapuram in men’s doubles. Priya Balraj and Jayashree Guptha pair won the women’s doubles by defeating Pugal Arasi and Ponmalar of Syed Ammal Engineering College. Priyanka Venkatesh and Mohamed Hussain won the under 10 girls and boys category respectively.

Sugumar, Patron, E. Lakshmanan, president, Rotary Club of Ramnad, B. Sivakumar, District Sports Officer, A. Alaudeen, Principal, Mohamed Sathak Polytechnic College, S. Shiek Abdullah and K.R. Chezhian, secretary and treasurer of the Ramanathapuram Badminton Association took part.
